I guess that when Toyota dealers here in Mexico get the Supra it’s just not gonna sell. Mexicans are, amongst other things, really brand concious ... so spending sixty thousand dollars on a Toyota is really something I don’t see very probable. But this has more to do with BMW.

Kinja'd!!!

You see, the Supra isn’t a Toyota (news flash!), which means that if a dealer wants to sell them, they will need to buy BMW tooling for the servicing... and that’s a problem.

I’m not certain how much the tooling cots, but I doubt that the ROI is gonna be good on that since Toyota won’t be able to sell many Supras here. Plus, what if owners want to service their Supras at BMW shops with techs that have more experience with BMWs? Would BMW let them. Well, no... it wouldn’t let them.

Well, that’s gonna be an issue.

On the other hand, could this turn out to be great? Maybe Toyota dealers could start taking in X5s and 540is for service for a third of the cost. But one thing is clear; Very few dealers will sell Supras because of the cost.

How much does the tooling cost? Oh... you’re gonna love it.

https://www.bmwtechinfo.com/

First you need the BMW-specific ICOM setup, that’s $1000 or so. Because of the BMW-specific encryption. About a grand for a laptop dedicated to just working on the Zupras.

Then it’s $2500 per year just for the subscription. Not including ANY of the mechanical special tools. That’s JUST to do BASIC diags and software recalls.

I would not be shocked if the supra doesn’t sell well here in the states.

much like the reasons in mexico, the average american wouldn’t spend that kind of money on a toyota that was made popular in what was basically the live action version of midnight club.

apparently not even the supra fanboys would buy this car (/s as we’ve seen their bitching on all formats).

my question is, what demographic actually would buy this?

Well, I mean... to justify that you'd need to sell a lot of supras. Plus I doubt Toyota is gonna give you the Supras unless you offer seven years of support for customers or something like that.

I love it to death and back..... Primarily because it’s stupid and it pisses bros off.

But yeah, it's a niche market. Not many TAE's exist.

I have no qualms with it myself. I think it looks really good from the back and bimmer inline engines are one of the best sounding engines in my own opinion.

but I see the same future as the original mk4. overlooked on the showroom floor, and a great  secondhand value (at first).

Lets see how it develops... as it stands it looks like a small volume car, I don't think we're gonna see many.

Standard terms are warranty. Assuming 3/36 that means $10,000USD per year just to do basic diag. Nothing else. These numbers go up and up and up and up. BMW special shift fork tool? $900. Special screwdriver ice pick? $550. And so on. Repeat until sobbing.

Yet not quite as bad as Ford Rotunda.

I would be baffled if Toyota dealers needed to pay for BMW software. IIRC the software is supposed to be 100% Toyota, even if all of the hardware is BMW. Still, I wouldn’t touch it with a richer mans wallet I try to support car manufacturers that support enthusiasts and that is a demographic Toyota has not historically supported or invested in.

Uff. Yeah, I can't imagine many Toyota dealers are gonna buy into that. Plus, what kind of self respecting BMW shares a service bay with a tOyOtA?
